Social insurance and family-care systems shape support for people across working and retirement years, though rules and access differ by country. In Norway, more than one million people aged 62 and older received retirement pensions in 2025, with receipt becoming nearly universal among those 67 and older. In Ukraine, specified groups qualify for full sick-leave payments regardless of insurance history, while maternity and childcare leave count toward insurance records under rules that depend on employment status and when the leave occurred. Research and personal experience described in a separate article suggest that non-birthing parents’ leave can support maternal and infant health and strengthen family and community ties. In South Korea, some young adults facing difficult job and housing markets are taking on household chores and caregiving for parents in exchange for family support, treating those duties as work while seeking financial independence.
