Privacy groups file five complaints against Scale AI over worker tracking
European privacy and digital-rights groups have filed five complaints against Scale AI in France, Italy, the Netherlands and Austria, alleging that its Outlier platform unlawfully surveils freelancers who help train AI systems. The complaints cite trackers and monitoring software that allegedly capture workers’ keystrokes, mouse movements and other personal data, as well as repeated identity checks involving government IDs and face recordings through Persona. They also challenge how Outlier assigns work and uses bonuses to encourage rapid task completion; the complaints say four workers received no response to requests for copies of their data. Scale did not immediately respond to a request for comment, while its published privacy policy says verification is used to confirm identity and skills and reduce fraud, and that an alternative method may be available in some circumstances; the policy does not settle the specific allegations.
