Modal adds Nvidia Vera CPUs after tests show double workload capacity
AI cloud startup Modal plans to deploy Nvidia’s new Vera CPUs for AI-agent workloads after its early tests found the chips handled twice as much work as the currently available Intel and AMD processors it tested. The move marks a bid by Nvidia to expand beyond its established GPU business and compete in a CPU market long dominated by Intel and AMD, though Modal will keep all three suppliers in a mixed fleet and assign jobs to the hardware best suited to them. Integrating Vera will require software changes, and Modal’s results are specific to its workloads and current-generation rival chips; newer Intel and AMD processors could narrow the performance gap. Nvidia has projected at least $20 billion in Vera revenue this fiscal year and estimates the market at about $200 billion, while other companies, including OpenAI, Anthropic and Oracle, have also indicated plans to use the chips.
