Tropical Storms Odalys and Fay Form in Pacific and Atlantic

Tropical Storm Odalys formed in the Eastern Pacific southwest of Baja California with maximum sustained winds near 45 mph and is expected to strengthen into a hurricane, though it is moving over open water and poses no immediate threat to land. Forecasters say Odalys could later turn northeast, but its track remains uncertain because of possible interaction with another developing system. The second system, southeast of Hawaii, has a chance to develop later this week and could increase showers and thunderstorms across the islands, although it is not currently considered an immediate threat. In the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Fay formed southwest of the Azores with winds near 45 mph and is expected to weaken or dissipate over the open ocean without affecting land. The Pacific’s heightened activity is occurring during an unusually active season that forecasters have linked in part to strengthening El Niño conditions.
