Officials Rule Multiple Police Shootings Justified
Authorities in Mississippi, South Dakota, California and Wisconsin have concluded that officers’ use of force was justified in several separate shootings. Mississippi’s attorney general cleared officers in three incidents, including a Richland standoff in which a suspect fired at police and was killed. In South Dakota, a state investigation found a deputy was justified in shooting a man who had fired at deputies while they attempted to serve a mental health detention warrant; the deputy he struck later died. California prosecutors said a deputy was justified in fatally shooting a 17-year-old who was trying to stab another deputy, while Wisconsin prosecutors cleared an officer who shot and wounded a suspect after an hours-long standoff during which the suspect allegedly fired at police and later refused orders to drop his gun.
