Ohio Man Convicted of Perjury Over Rwanda Genocide
A federal jury in Boston convicted Ohio resident Eric Tabaro Nshimiye of four counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice for testimony he gave in 2019 while defending former classmate Jean Leonard Teganya, who was later convicted of immigration fraud and perjury. Nshimiye had denied that he or Teganya took part in the 1994 Rwandan genocide; prosecutors said he concealed his own involvement, while survivors testified that he participated in attacks on Tutsi people, including killings and roadblocks where victims were selected. The verdict concerns his false testimony, not a conviction for participating in the genocide, and prosecutors dropped a separate immigration-fraud charge before trial. Nshimiye fled Rwanda in 1994, entered the United States as a refugee in 1995, and later became a U.S. citizen; the genocide killed an estimated 800,000 people, mostly Tutsis.
