Oracle CEO Says AI Speeds Coding, Stalls Delivery
Oracle’s internal rollout of OpenAI’s ChatGPT Enterprise and Codex reached about 80% of employees within three months, after the company had struggled to make generative AI broadly useful across its workforce. The tools have sharply accelerated coding, reducing some work that once took two or three quarters to roughly a week, but testing, validation, deployment and release processes have become the new constraints, leaving overall product delivery timelines largely unchanged. Oracle is responding by tracking model usage and costs, including steering routine tasks toward cheaper systems, while executives acknowledge that high adoption does not yet demonstrate a companywide return on investment. The initiative has also coincided with major restructuring, including a reported decline in headcount and billions of dollars in severance and exit costs, underscoring the human and operational costs of translating AI-driven productivity into faster business results.
