Orange County approves $800M tourist tax package after debate and protest
Orange County commissioners approved a major tourist-tax spending package after a contentious debate, public comment from 78 speakers and a labor-led protest urging them to delay the decision. The plan directs $350 million to the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, alongside funding for stadium parking, a new theater, and a soccer and track facility at the University of Central Florida. Other proposed investments include projects in Eatonville, a children’s museum, and grants for arts and ecotourism. Opponents questioned the timing and public input, particularly as county leadership is about to change and the county faces uncertainty over its finances. Supporters, including Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, argued that moving ahead now could help control project costs.
