Oregon Student Sues Police Over Shooting

Oregon college lacrosse player Maverick Lyon has sued Albany police officers, the city, Benton County and a county probation officer over a January 6 shooting during his escape from an alleged hostage situation involving his brother. The lawsuit says officers shot Lyon at least five times after he dropped the knife he had picked up in self-defense and tried to signal that he needed help; he suffered serious injuries, underwent multiple surgeries and missed a semester of college and his senior lacrosse season. The suit also alleges officials had been warned the previous day that Lyon’s brother, who had a history of drug use and was on post-prison supervision, was acting dangerously. A Benton County district attorney’s memo cleared the officers of wrongdoing, a conclusion Lyon’s lawsuit contests; the county said it does not comment on pending litigation.
