Pacific sees three hurricanes at once as El Niño boosts activity

The eastern and central Pacific are unusually active, with Hurricanes Polo, Odalys and Nolo tracked at the same time and additional systems monitored for possible development. Polo is forecast to approach or make landfall on Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula early next week, while Odalys is weakening over open water. Nolo is near Hawaii and could bring heavy rain, dangerous flooding and landslides, especially on the Big Island. Forecasters and researchers say unusually warm ocean waters associated with a strong El Niño are helping fuel the heightened Pacific activity; El Niño can also suppress Atlantic hurricane activity, which has been notably quiet this season.
