Paraguay Opposition Seeks Peña Impeachment Over Ueno Collapse
Paraguay’s opposition has filed impeachment articles against President Santiago Peña and Vice President Pedro Alliana, with 35 lawmakers calling for a congressional session to consider the charges. The push followed the central bank’s takeover of digital lender Ueno after it fell below minimum solvency requirements, leaving nearly 3 million customers unable to access their accounts while authorities arrange the return of deposits. Lawmakers accuse Peña of conflicts of interest and allege misuse of pension funds and institutional cover-ups; Peña held shares in the group controlling Ueno before selling them. Peña urged leaders to prioritize depositors and said those responsible for irregularities would face justice, while his governing side says there are no grounds for removal. The crisis has also prompted the central bank chief’s resignation and the detention of eight Ueno executives as prosecutors investigate possible irregularities.
