Patrick Kane Returns, Joins Blackhawks’ Young Core

Patrick Kane is adjusting to a dramatically reworked Blackhawks roster as he returns to Chicago on a two-year, $16 million contract for his 20th NHL season. Although the surroundings and logo are familiar, nearly all of his teammates and coaches are new, creating an unusual dynamic in which the 37-year-old franchise legend is also a newcomer who is increasingly comfortable joking with the team’s emerging young core. Chicago hopes Kane, defenseman Bo Byram and the continued development of players such as Alex Vlasic, Oliver Moore and Nick Lardis can push the team into Western Conference contention after a last-place finish in the Central Division last season. Russian forward Roman Kantserov, a 2023 second-round pick who produced 64 points in 63 KHL games, has impressed in training camp and is skating on the top line with Kane and Frank Nazar while awaiting Connor Bedard’s expected November return from shoulder surgery. Kane remains productive despite being past his peak, recording 57 points in 67 games for Detroit last season, and says the energy and ambition of Chicago’s young players have reinforced his belief that returning was the right decision.
