Pedestrian Killed by Multiple Cars on I-40

A woman was killed early Friday after being struck multiple times by vehicles on eastbound I-40 in Durham near Davis Drive and South Miami Boulevard, close to Raleigh-Durham International Airport. Police have not said how many vehicles were involved or what led to the woman being on the highway, and her identity was being withheld pending notification of her family. Investigators closed about a mile of the interstate for several hours, causing significant backups on I-40 and I-885; the highway had reopened by 10:45 a.m.
