Philadelphia Marks Coltrane Centennial With Citywide Events

John Coltrane’s centennial on Sept. 23, 2026, is prompting worldwide celebrations, with Philadelphia—where he spent 12 formative years—at the center of the commemorations. Coltrane developed his distinctive sound in Philadelphia, overcame heroin addiction, and created foundations for landmark works including Giant Steps and A Love Supreme. His career lasted just over two decades but produced more than 50 albums as a leader and reshaped jazz through modal playing, adventurous improvisation, composition, and intense spirituality. Philadelphia events include concerts, film screenings, lectures, exhibitions, neighborhood tours, and a citywide festival focused on North Philadelphia’s history and Coltrane’s legacy, while City Council has declared Sept. 23 John Coltrane Day. WRTI is also marking the milestone with a 26-hour international streaming and radio marathon spanning the full range of his music.
