Philippines and China Trade Blame Over South China Sea Vessel Collision

A China Coast Guard vessel collided with the Philippine fisheries ship BRP Datu Magat Salamat on Friday near Abad Santos Shoal, about 54 nautical miles, or roughly 100 kilometers, off Palawan. The Philippine vessel was delivering subsidized fuel to Filipino fishermen when China Coast Guard vessel CCG-21585 allegedly cut across its stern, came within about 10 meters, and struck its starboard side during a second maneuver. Philippine officials said the collision damaged railings, metal supports, deck fixtures and equipment, but reported no injuries, and the Philippine Coast Guard dispatched surface and air assets to assist the crew. The Philippine Coast Guard characterized the maneuvers as dangerous and deliberate, while China said the Philippine vessel ignored warnings, altered course and accelerated across the Chinese ship’s bow, placing responsibility for the collision on Manila. The incident adds to escalating tensions over competing claims in the South China Sea, including the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone.
