New Venice museum revisits Pierre Cardin's futuristic fashion legacy

A new Pierre Cardin museum has opened at the designer’s former Venetian palazzo, showcasing roughly 100 to 130 garments and other works that highlight his futuristic influence on 1960s fashion. The museum was inaugurated with a costume reception recalling the landmark 1951 Beistegui Ball, for which Cardin designed costumes, including one for Salvador Dalí. Cardin bought the palazzo in 1981 and used it as both a home and creative retreat; the museum aims to refocus attention on his innovative designs, ready-to-wear ambitions and contributions to functional art. Organizers also hope the collection will balance Cardin’s legacy of groundbreaking fashion against the later commercial overextension of his name through widespread licensing.
