Pike Seeks End to Isolation After Botched Execution
Christa Pike’s attorneys have asked a federal judge to end her isolation in a Tennessee prison infirmary, arguing that it violates a 2024 settlement that ended decades of solitary confinement and allowed her to work, eat, exercise and socialize with other women. Pike has been kept apart from other inmates since returning to prison on October 9 after hospitalization for injuries sustained in a failed execution attempt on September 30. Her lawyers say officials have given no end date for the isolation and that it is worsening her physical and psychological suffering; Pike has also described ongoing pain and poor conditions in the infirmary. They want her to be housed with other women receiving medical care and ask that the settlement’s protections be restored as her medical needs and safety allow. Tennessee says the infirmary arrangement is based on her medical needs, while the state reviews the failed execution.
