Poland Threatens Fines Over Russian Disinformation
Poland is threatening fines against social media companies it says are not doing enough to counter Russian disinformation and fake accounts. NASK, Poland’s national research institute, reported sending platforms more than 65,000 notices in the first half of 2026; the platforms acted on fewer than a quarter, removing about 7% of reported material and moderating just over 17%. Digital Affairs Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski called the platforms “silent allies” of Russia and accused them of benefiting from disinformation. The government is demanding faster responses, effective Polish-language moderation teams, the removal of detected bot networks and changes to what it describes as sham appeals processes. Moscow denies Western accusations that Russia spreads disinformation to destabilize other countries, while the platforms named in one report did not immediately comment.
