Police Clear Lisbon and Porto Housing Protest Camps, Arrest 31

Police cleared housing-protest camps in Lisbon and Porto early Sunday after thousands marched against Portugal’s worsening affordability crisis, arresting 31 people who were later released and are due in court. Police said protesters had ignored orders to disperse, while organizers and activists described the actions as disproportionate and reported far more injuries than the authorities did. Housing prices in Portugal have more than doubled since 2017, and rents for new leases have nearly doubled, hitting young people especially hard. Protesters are calling on the government to scrap a bill that would make evictions easier and end rent caps on new leases.
