Police Death Trials Delayed Until 2027
The trials of former Jackson police officers Kenya McCarty, Avery Willis and James Land in Keith Murriel’s 2022 death have been delayed until June 2027, after more than 20 postponements. McCarty and Willis face second-degree murder charges, while Land faces manslaughter; all three have pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors allege the officers repeatedly tased Murriel while restraining him, then placed him face-down in a patrol car. Body-camera footage showed officers did not check on him before an ambulance arrived about an hour later, when he was unresponsive. The defense blamed prosecutors for the latest delay, while court records show both sides have requested or contributed to delays; it is not yet clear whether the officers will be tried together.
