Political Hate Speech, Attacks Raise Concerns
Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi says rhetoric by senior U.S. government officials is deepening polarization and contributing to hostility toward minority groups, including Muslims, Indians and LGBTQ people. He pointed to a since-deleted Department of Homeland Security post that used a cartoon to tell an Indian Sikh man to “self deport,” arguing that such messaging can encourage real-world violence. Krishnamoorthi noted that a Sikh truck driver was stabbed 17 times about a week later, presenting the incident as a warning about the consequences of demeaning rhetoric and calling for accountability.
