Missouri House Candidate Charged, Drops Out

Missouri Republican state House nominee Thomas Christopher Ross, 37, was charged with conspiring to distribute a controlled substance after prosecutors alleged he planned to frame primary opponent Louise Secker by planting cocaine and Adderall in her purse or vehicle. According to an FBI affidavit, Ross allegedly gave a former campaign manager a glove containing the drugs and discussed the scheme in text messages, but the aide alerted police and the plan was apparently never carried out. Ross narrowly defeated Secker in the Republican primary for House District 161 by roughly 32 or 33 votes. The investigation began with Joplin police and was later taken over by the FBI, which reportedly recorded Ross allegedly reaffirming the plan. The Missouri Republican Party urged Ross to withdraw, and local officials confirmed he signed paperwork dropping out of the race while jailed. The allegations remain unproven in court, and Ross’s response and legal representation were not immediately available.
