Democrat Pappas Wins New Hampshire Senate Nomination
U.S. Rep. Chris Pappas won the Democratic primary for New Hampshire’s open U.S. Senate seat, defeating progressive challenger Karishma Manzur and advancing to a closely watched general election. Pappas, a centrist four-term congressman, benefited from strong Democratic establishment support, a major fundraising advantage and endorsements from former Vice President Kamala Harris and other prominent Democrats. Manzur mounted a late challenge focused on Medicare for All, higher taxes on wealthy Americans and criticism of Pappas’s support for Israel and backing from pro-Israel donors. Former U.S. Sen. John Sununu won the Republican primary with President Donald Trump’s endorsement and will face Pappas in November. The contest to replace retiring Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen could help determine control of the closely divided Senate.
