Trump says he would love to see Ireland unified
During a visit to Ireland, U.S. President Donald Trump said he would love to see Ireland reunified, calling it a “fantastic” development that he believes will eventually happen. Speaking after meeting Taoiseach Micheál Martin in Dublin, Trump acknowledged that the United Kingdom would have a say and said he did not intend to cause problems. The comments concerned the constitutional status of Northern Ireland, whose future under the 1998 peace agreement can be determined through a referendum if majority support emerges. Northern Ireland’s unionist politicians rejected Trump’s intervention, saying its constitutional future must be decided by its people and reaffirming support for remaining part of the United Kingdom. Trump also met Irish President Catherine Connolly, attended the Irish Open at his Doonbeg golf resort and said he could help resolve the United Kingdom-Argentina dispute over the Falkland Islands if asked.
