Sanders Urges Trump, Xi to Negotiate AI Treaty

Sen. Bernie Sanders is urging current President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping to negotiate a binding treaty that would pause development of advanced AI and ban artificial superintelligence, which he defines as systems smarter than humans and capable of operating beyond human control. Sanders argues that slowing the technology is insufficient and that a global agreement is needed to prevent catastrophic risks, including loss of control, cyberattacks and biological misuse. His proposal follows calls from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and xAI CEO Elon Musk to “pace the frontier” and slow the development of increasingly capable models. Trump has taken a more competitive position, emphasizing that the United States leads China in AI and that the country that wins the race will prevail. Sanders has also introduced legislation seeking a permanent U.S. ban on superintelligent AI, though the bill’s full text has not been released.
