Former Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl Dies at 84

"The thing I enjoyed most about my public service, in addition to helping to make good policy for the country, was helping to teach people about our government, why it's important for them to participate in it," former Arizona Sen. Jon Kyl told Amazing Arizonans host Mike Broomhead on Jan. 15, 2025. His family announced Thursday he died at 84 from complications related to a neurological disorder—20 months after the podcast. Kyl served in the House from 1987 to 1995 and the Senate from 1995 to 2013, returning in 2018 after John McCain's death. He worked on Western water policy and helped guide Justice Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation. A wire summary lists a Senate minority whip role; Just The News calls him Majority Whip. He withdrew from public life in December 2025 after a dementia diagnosis. He told Broomhead: "If nothing else, vote, but there's so much more you can do. And if you really care about your future, you care about your kids and grandkids and so on … make a little time for participating in one of the political parties or in some other way where you can say at the end of your life, 'Yeah, I did something.'"
