Sweden PM Kristersson Resigns After Election Defeat

Sweden’s centre-left opposition narrowly defeated Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson’s right-wing bloc in the parliamentary election, winning 176 seats to 173 in the 349-member Riksdag. After the final vote count confirmed the result, Kristersson resigned as prime minister. Social Democratic leader Magdalena Andersson is expected to seek to form a government with the Left, Centre and Green parties, though negotiations could be difficult because of policy differences, including taxation. The election marked a setback for the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats, which lost support despite backing Kristersson’s government and seeking cabinet positions.
