Guilfoyle Faces State Department Inspector General Probe
The Wall Street Journal reported that U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle asked Republican donor Eric Deters to pay a $100,000 American Express bill shortly before her Senate confirmation hearing, and allegedly urged him to send the money directly to the card issuer without documenting their exchanges. Deters says he had already given Guilfoyle $300,000 and received no favors; an earlier account said he had sought her help and offered as much as $1 million. Guilfoyle’s lawyer disputes the messages’ authenticity and says she was owed money for speaking, travel and event support, which Deters denies. The State Department inspector general is investigating, and congressional Democrats have called for an inquiry, including over reports that Guilfoyle promoted a Greek company and its access to diplomatic engagements. A U.S. Embassy official defended Guilfoyle’s vetting and public service, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio declined to address the claims and criticized reporters for asking about a report he had not reviewed; Vice President JD Vance said he wanted the facts reviewed. The allegations have prompted scrutiny of Guilfoyle’s judgment, but available reports do not establish that she committed a crime.
