Groups Sue Texas Over Nearly 600,000 Delayed Voter Applications
Voting-rights groups sued Texas officials, asking a state district judge to enforce a 2021 settlement requiring a reliable online voter-registration process through the Department of Public Safety’s driver’s-license portal. The lawsuit alleges a computer glitch kept nearly 600,000 applications from reaching county offices, with some delayed since October 2025, and disrupted registration during driver’s-license transactions. The applications were later sent to counties, and the secretary of state’s office said counties had cleared the backlog, though advocates and officials have raised concerns about the disruption’s impact and system reliability. Separately, Bexar County closed its elections office to the public for two days to process more than 10,000 registration applications and thousands of mail-ballot submissions ahead of early voting.
