Hoboken, Birmingham Weigh Short-Term Rental Rules After Incidents
Hoboken Mayor Emily Jabbour plans to propose new short-term rental rules after a disturbance at a Garden Street rental prompted a SWAT response and left several people seriously injured. Police arrested four men, ages 18 to 20, on aggravated-assault and weapons charges and took a juvenile into custody; the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating. The proposed rules would set safety standards and hold owners accountable, and may bar rentals in rent-controlled units and cap their use at 60 days a year. A local fair-housing advocate has urged officials to consider public safety without rushing the lawmaking process. Separately, Birmingham, Michigan, is expected to consider a permanent short-term rental ban after a shooting following a party at a rental in April struck three homes and a vehicle; the city imposed a six-month moratorium while reviewing restrictions.
