France Riots May Strengthen Le Pen
Violent riots across France have intensified concerns about public order and put pressure on President Emmanuel Macron’s authority and centrist political project. Marine Le Pen has used the unrest to argue that mainstream politics has failed, promising tougher action on immigration and lawlessness while presenting herself as a law-and-order leader; polling places her near the front of the 2027 race, though she has lost previous presidential runoffs. One survey found that 46% of Muslim respondents would consider leaving France if Le Pen became president. Far-left leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon has also gained attention for supporting protesters, a stance that could help him reach a runoff against Le Pen. U.S. President Donald Trump praised Le Pen as a conservative voice and criticized her treatment by the courts, but did not endorse her; he called the unrest a revolution and blamed immigration. The political consequences of the unrest remain uncertain.
