Fresno Council Weighs $1 Million Immigrant Defense Fund
Fresno City Councilmember Miguel Arias is seeking to revive the city’s Immigration Legal Defense Fund with a proposed $1 million allocation for legal services for residents facing detention or deportation amid stepped-up federal immigration enforcement. The council is scheduled to consider the resolution on Oct. 22; it would direct city officials to identify funding through the midyear budget process, potentially using savings from vacant positions, and have the City Attorney’s Office administer services provided by outside legal organizations. The proposal would expand on a $200,000 fund approved in 2021, and supporters say legal representation can help residents challenge detentions and defend their rights. Mayor Jerry Dyer says the proposal is premature before the budget is known and questions whether city funding would duplicate services offered by nonprofits and other agencies; even if approved, the full amount would not necessarily be immediately available.
