Seattle Council Votes 8-1 on RV Permits and $5M Aid Program
Seattle’s City Council voted 8-1 to approve a six-part Vehicle Resident Assistance Program, directing $5 million in existing funds to outreach, safe parking, vehicle storage and services for people living in vehicles. The plan creates permits that allow eligible RV residents to park overnight while following program rules and engaging with services; unpermitted motorhomes and travel trailers will generally be limited to two hours of street parking and may be impounded. The RV rules are scheduled to take effect April 30, 2027, with enforcement beginning by July 31 after a warning period. Supporters say the program offers a path toward safer shelter and housing, while opponents warn the restrictions could displace people. City analysis also cited staffing, storage and legal challenges to enforcement.
