Tulsa board approves consolidation of 17 schools
Tulsa Public Schools’ board approved a plan to close or consolidate 17 school sites, including 14 elementary schools, two middle schools and an alternative program, to address declining enrollment and save about $12 million. The changes are scheduled to take effect in the 2027–28 school year, despite appeals from dozens of families and community members who urged the board to delay or reconsider the decision. The district says affected schools have fewer than 400 students and use less than 65% of their buildings, and it plans enrollment assistance, special education support, school tours and transportation planning for families. Officials say consolidation will help direct resources toward students and retain qualified educators, while residents mourn the loss of long-standing neighborhood institutions and worry about the future of vacant buildings.
