Appeals Court to Hear California Ballot Dispute
A federal appeals court will hear the Trump administration’s bid to stop California from counting ballots it says may have been cast by noncitizens. The Justice Department demanded that counties review and sequester roughly 20,000 ballots within 48 hours, but California officials say the federal list is unverified and contains errors, including voters assigned to the wrong county. Some local officials say many people on the list are U.S.-born and warn the demands could disenfranchise eligible voters; counties say they are continuing to process ballots. State leaders have accused the administration of undermining confidence in the election, while the Justice Department cites recent charges against 28 foreign nationals as grounds to investigate suspected noncitizen voting.
