Virginia Senator Louise Lucas Indicted in Marijuana Scheme
Virginia state Sen. L. Louise Lucas surrendered after being indicted alongside six relatives and associates in an alleged marijuana-trafficking, racketeering, bribery and money-laundering scheme. Prosecutors allege that since at least 2019, Lucas helped direct the purchase and distribution of more than 100 kilograms of marijuana through businesses connected to The Cannabis Outlet, laundered proceeds and used her political influence to benefit and shield the enterprise. Lucas faces five charges; the indictment also names two of her daughters and other family members, and the allegations have not been proven in court. The case follows FBI searches of Lucas’ office and a cannabis business in May, and reports say the investigation began during the Biden administration. The charges were announced less than two weeks before the midterm elections, drawing scrutiny of the timing, though Lucas’ state Senate seat is not on the ballot this year.
