Judge dismisses DOJ suit over Utah voter rolls
A federal judge dismissed with prejudice the Justice Department’s lawsuit seeking Utah’s complete, unredacted voter database, barring the same claim from being refiled. Judge David Barlow ruled that the Civil Rights Act does not entitle the attorney general to the records, finding Utah’s voter roll is not a record that comes into the lieutenant governor’s possession under the law. The requested database includes sensitive details such as voters’ addresses, birth dates, driver’s license numbers and partial Social Security numbers. Lt. Gov. Deidre Henderson said she could not legally disclose the information and had offered publicly available voter lists instead. The ruling adds to the Justice Department’s losses in similar efforts around the country; federal election monitors are also expected in Utah, though officials said their deployment is unrelated to the dispute.
