Seattle Schools Weigh Five Possible Merger Pairings

Seattle Public Schools has begun a months-long process to consider school mergers for the 2027–28 school year, citing enrollment below 50,000, budget pressures and disparities in building conditions, staffing and educational resources. Reported possible pairings include Salmon Bay and Licton Springs, View Ridge and Decatur, Highland Park and Sanislo, Montlake and Stevens, and Sacajawea and John Rogers; the district has not released a complete list, and no decisions have been made. Superintendent Ben Shuldiner plans discussions with staff and families followed by public hearings, with a School Board decision expected in late February or early March. The district says affected families would receive priority in open enrollment and an extended transfer-application window. Communities remain wary after strong opposition to a controversial 2024 closure proposal.
