Nationwide Strikes and Protests Sweep France
A nationwide strike and demonstrations swept France on Nov. 5, bringing together students, unions and other groups protesting the rising cost of living, low wages, inequality, public-service cuts and deteriorating school conditions. Hundreds of thousands joined rallies across the country, and authorities deployed about 70,000 police and gendarmes amid concern that earlier protests had escalated into clashes, vandalism and looting. Strikes disrupted rail and other public transport, schools and public services, and the Eiffel Tower closed to visitors. Unions called for higher wages, better working and education conditions, and changes to government policy. The protests increased pressure on President Emmanuel Macron’s government amid budget disputes and ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
