Michigan Democrat Stevens Backs Rogers for Senate
Rep. Haley Stevens, a Michigan Democrat, backed Republican Senate nominee Mike Rogers two days before Election Day after previously supporting Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed. Stevens cited tensions over campaign ads and her exclusion from an El-Sayed event, and said her decision was personal and a stand against hate. The move prompted resignations among Stevens’ staff and condemnation from Democratic leaders. A final New York Times/Siena poll showed El-Sayed leading Rogers 53% to 42%. Democratic strategist James Carville criticized Stevens in vulgar terms, saying her political career was over and accusing her of sacrificing party loyalty.
