DOJ Sends Target Letters in Alaska Senate Probe
The Justice Department issued more than 20 target and preservation letters to roughly 20 people, mostly Democrats, in a criminal investigation of the Alaska Senate race, with news of the letters surfacing on Election Day, November 3, 2026. Those notified include Democratic election lawyer Marc Elias and others connected to the DSCC and Mary Peltola's campaign. The probe concerns recruitment of unaffiliated candidate Dan J. Sullivan Jr., who shares a name with Republican incumbent Sen. Dan Sullivan, and examines possible election-related offenses including donor fraud and conspiracy. More than 100 subpoenas have been issued or are being prepared. Alaska U.S. Attorney Michael Heyman said the investigation has been ongoing for several months and that New York Times reporting on alleged Peltola campaign recruitment prompted a surge of law enforcement resources to Alaska. Elias said, "No one should be surprised that President Trump's Department of Justice is targeting me and my law firm on Election Day," denounced a "sham investigation" with "zero evidence of wrongdoing," and said he would not be intimidated. The allegations have not been established.
