Peggy Flanagan for US Senate
Peggy Flanagan won Minnesota’s Senate race, becoming the first Native American woman elected to the U.S. Senate, and joins a large incoming class of Democratic senators that includes several other historic firsts. In her first news conference as senator-elect, she called for new Democratic leadership, saying she is grateful to Chuck Schumer but will support replacing him; she did not name a successor. Flanagan and other incoming progressives want Democrats to pursue ambitious policies such as Medicare for All, universal child care and a higher federal minimum wage, while also seeking bipartisan action on issues including health insurance and the war in Iran. She has also criticized reliance on corporate PAC money, arguing Democrats should answer to voters.
