Democrat Nathan Johnson elected Texas attorney general to succeed Paxton
Democrat Nathan Johnson was elected Texas attorney general, defeating Republican state Sen. Mayes Middleton and succeeding Ken Paxton, who left the post to run for the U.S. Senate. Libertarian Tom Oxford was also on the ballot, and Johnson is scheduled to take office in January 2027. The attorney general leads Texas’s legal work, including defending state laws and representing the state in disputes with the federal government. In Colorado, Democrat Jena Griswold and Republican Michael Allen competed for attorney general in a race with major implications for the state’s lawsuits against the Trump administration: Griswold pledged to continue them, while Allen said he might withdraw from some he considered politically motivated.
