Vermont Governor’s Race Could Make History
Vermont voters are choosing among candidates in a historic 2026 governor’s race: Republican incumbent Phil Scott could win an unprecedented sixth consecutive term, while Democrat/Progressive Amanda Janoo could become the first challenger in 64 years to defeat a sitting governor. Democrat Molly Gray is seeking to reclaim the lieutenant governorship from Republican incumbent John Rodgers; incumbent U.S. Rep. Becca Balint faces Republican Gerald Malloy and independent Adam Ortiz, and the secretary of state race pits Democratic incumbent Sarah Copeland Hanzas against Republican H. Brooke Paige. Voters are also selecting other statewide and county officials and all 180 state legislators, and deciding on two proposed constitutional amendments and local measures; local coverage includes Addison, Orange and Washington counties. Polls are scheduled to close at 7 p.m., with results expected after the Associated Press begins reporting ballots. If no candidate for governor, lieutenant governor or treasurer wins a majority, Vermont’s General Assembly selects the winner from the top three finishers; the governor’s race has been decided this way 24 times, most recently in 2014.
