Conley Defeats Lawler in New York’s NY-17 Race
Democrat Cait Conley, an Army combat veteran and former national security official in the Biden administration, defeated two-term Republican Rep. Mike Lawler in New York’s 17th Congressional District, winning 52.1% to 47.8% and flipping a seat Democrats had targeted. Lawler conceded and congratulated Conley, later saying that even Jesus Christ could not have won amid the collapse in his support. Counting in Westchester County was delayed by ballot-processing problems, including voting-machine programming issues. The race unfolded amid voter dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump, including concerns about the economy and the war with Iran, and a broader Democratic surge that returned control of the House and Senate to Democrats. Conley campaigned on her military and national security experience and LGBTQ+ rights, and said she would focus on corruption, lowering costs and making government serve the public.
