Nino Mangione Narrowly Leads Baltimore Council Race
Republican Nino Mangione narrowly led Democrat Shawn McIntosh in the race for Baltimore County Council’s District 5, receiving about 49% of the vote to McIntosh’s 45%. Several outlets reported Mangione’s victory, but results remained unofficial as additional mail ballots were counted, and McIntosh had not conceded. Mangione, a former Maryland delegate who joined the council earlier this year to fill a vacancy, campaigned on public safety, support for law enforcement and tougher penalties for repeat offenders. His election drew attention because he is the cousin of Luigi Mangione, who pleaded guilty in federal court to killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson and faces a separate New York state murder case. Luigi Mangione’s lawyers have asked the state court to dismiss that case on double-jeopardy grounds.
