Poll: Half of Voters Would Back Democratic Socialist
As midterm elections approached, Democratic Rep. Suzan DelBene urged voters to elect Democrats, while a Liberal Currents opinion article argued that Republicans’ accusations of socialism were hypocritical and portrayed President Trump’s economic interventions and governing style as a greater socialist threat. An Economist/YouGov poll found that half of registered voters said they would vote for a democratic socialist, compared with 41% who would not; support was especially high among Democrats and independents. Yet in a hypothetical contest between a democratic socialist supporting higher taxes on billionaires, Medicare for All and abolishing ICE and a moderate Republican focused on spending cuts and the deficit, voters favored the Republican, 52% to 48%. Overall, respondents preferred capitalism to socialism, 51% to 20%, with the remainder unsure—underscoring that openness to a candidate labeled democratic socialist did not necessarily translate into broad support for socialism as an economic system.
