Poll finds one-third back second try to execute Christa Pike

A Reuters/Ipsos poll found that 33% of Americans support trying again to execute a death-row inmate who survives an attempt, while 39% favor life in prison and 26% are unsure. The survey followed Tennessee’s failed Sept. 30 lethal-injection attempt against Christa Pike, who survived after receiving two doses of pentobarbital, was hospitalized, and has since returned to prison. Support for a second attempt was higher among Republicans than Democrats, 52% to 24%. Separately, 55% of respondents supported the death penalty for people convicted of the most serious crimes, down from 63% in 2017. Tennessee has not announced what will happen next for Pike, as courts consider whether states may schedule another execution after a failed attempt.
