Poll finds most South Carolina voters question Darline Graham’s experience
South Carolina’s Senate race has become unexpectedly competitive after Republican Darline Graham, appointed to replace her brother Lindsey Graham following his death, chose to run for a full term. The Associated Press voter poll found that about six in 10 voters think Graham lacks the experience to serve as a senator, although most Republicans believe she is qualified; Democrat Annie Andrews has mounted a stronger-than-expected challenge. Scrutiny of Graham intensified after she said during a debate that national security was “not my thing” when asked about Taiwan and the South China Sea, while she has argued voters are more concerned with everyday costs and health care. President Donald Trump has strongly backed Graham, and the race could give South Carolina its first woman elected to the Senate, as well as a chance for Democrats to win a statewide contest there for the first time in decades.
