Pope Leo Plans 10-City South America Tour

Pope Leo XIV will visit Uruguay, Argentina and Peru from Nov. 6 to 17 on an exceptionally demanding South American tour featuring about 50 events, 36 speeches, nine public Masses and extensive travel across 10 cities. The itinerary includes meetings with government and religious leaders, a prison visit in Buenos Aires, a Mass at Argentina’s Luján shrine, prayer vigils, and an address in Lima on Peru’s future. Leo will also return to Chiclayo, Peru, where he served as bishop, and meet with missionaries and representatives of Amazonian communities. The trip will include a meeting with Argentine President Javier Milei, a politically significant encounter after Leo’s criticism of the Iran war drew the ire of current President Donald Trump, whom Milei is seen as an ally. Leo, a Chicago native and Peruvian citizen, is the first pope to visit Uruguay since 1988 and the first to return to South America since Pope Francis traveled to Chile and Peru in 2018.
